Baroness Sarah Ludford is a Liberal Democrat member of the House of Lords, having been appointed a life peer in 1997. She previously served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) representing London from 1999 to 2014.
Her earlier career included roles as a UK civil servant, seven years working for the European Commission, and five years as a European affairs adviser in the City of London. She also served as a local councillor for the London Borough of Islington for eight years in the 1990s.
In the House of Lords, Baroness Ludford is an active contributor, focusing particularly on justice and home affairs, European affairs, foreign policy (with a strong interest in the Balkans, Turkey, Cyprus, and the Middle East), human rights, and equality issues. She currently serves on the European Affairs Committee (since January 2023) and previously served on the EU Justice Sub-Committee (2015-2019) and the Joint Committee on Human Rights (2019-2023).
During her time as an MEP, Baroness Ludford was the Liberal Democrat European spokeswoman on justice and human rights. She was active on measures to combat human trafficking and sexual crime, aid the search for missing children, and promote equality, serving as vice-chair of the European Parliament's anti-racism and diversity intergroup and as an active member of the LGBT+ intergroup. She remains a vocal campaigner against anti-Semitic, Islamophobic, and homophobic hate crime, while upholding the right to free speech.
Baroness Ludford continues to be involved with party groups, including serving as a Vice President of Liberal Democrat Friends of Israel. She is also Vice President of the law reform and human rights organisation JUSTICE and a Patron of Fair Trials International.
