Sudan Roundtable: Challenges, Opportunities, and the Path Forward
- Date: May 12, 2025 at 1:00pm - 2:30pm
- Location: Committee Room 13 House of Commons
Ceftus hosted a meeting in the House of Commons titled 'Challenges, Opportunities, and the Path Forward', which included His Excellency, the Head of Mission of Sudan, and Sudanese academic politicians convening to explore the root causes of the war and the realistic strategies for sustainable peace.
The roundtable discussion was moderated by Ibrahim Dogus, director of the Centre for Turkish Studies (CEFTUS)
H.E. Babikir Elamin shed light on the evolving conflict in Sudan, which is currently facing a detrimental turning point. Amongst his suggested strategies for ending the conflict, His Excellency called for enforcing the UN Security Council Resolutions, including the Darfur arms embargo. His Excellency recalled that "any serious attempt at peace must begin with addressing the UAE's destructive and destabilising role, the single most significant factor prolonging the war"
Other speakers at the event, Osman Mirghani and Dr. Hashim Eisa, discussed the international community's role in identifying and condemning external actors arming the RSF. Dr Hashim called out the UK government for failing to condemn the UAE's brutal role in this conflict, stating that "The UK does not want to denounce the UAE for its role in fuelling the war in Sudan, by supporting the Rapid Support Militia." Osman Mirghani stated that "this phase of the Sudanese conflict is the most dangerous because it combines military escalation, humanitarian collapse, regional destabilisation, and foreign interference into a volatile mix." He added that the "consequences of inaction will not be confined to Sudan's borders".
At the same time, Dr Zahra Ahmed highlighted the increasingly worrying rise in gender-based violence against women and girls in Sudan. Dr Zahra also raised worrying statistics concerning the rates of violence against women, showcasing that the number of people at risk of gender based violence has more than tripled in Sudan over the past two years. She added that "What is happening to Sudanese women is not just a humanitarian strategy, it is a dangerous escalation in how modern proxy warfare is targeting women".
Jeremy Corbyn, the independent MP for Islington North and the previous leader of the Labour Party, was also in attendance, alongside journalists and members of the public.
